Growing Your Houseplant Collection in Small Spaces
Creative Plant Styling and Display Ideas for Small Spaces
Welcome to another edition of the PlantsofK weekly newsletter!
This week in San Antonio we experienced a temperature drop and I was reminded that winter is in fact coming whether I like it or not 🥶 But the colder weather has not stopped me from getting new plants and I do not want to patiently wait through a winter season to see continued growth 😂 I recently ordered some new grow lights to place strategically around my home in the hopes that my indoor plants will have no idea what is going on outside. I will share the lights I am using in an upcoming post once I have tested them out!
This week’s newsletter will cover:
Growing Your Plant Collection in Small Spaces
Gift Ideas from Modern Sprout
Plant Spotlight: Burro’s Tail Succulent
Upcoming Planty Events

Growing Your Houseplant Collection in Small Spaces
Getting Creative with Growing Plants in Small Spaces
Whether you live in an apartment limited in space or in a large house with ample room, there sometimes comes a time in a plant parent’s journey where they feel like they are running out of space for their plants. As an apartment dweller myself, I have run into this problem before. This does not necessarily mean that you have reached your limit with plants! It can be fun to get creative with plant displays in your space, not only allowing your to collect even more houseplants but also create an amazing environment in your home. Here are some plant display ideas I love for when you have used up all the available surface space in your home and need some creative inspiration.
Variety of Placement (Layering Heights)
Rather than crowding all of your plants on one large surface that you feel is out of the way, spread your plants about your space at varying heights. Use small spaces to individual plants. For example, instead of keeping all plants on one large table, squeeze one in that empty space on the bookshelf, another one in the extra space on the coffee table, etc. If you can vary the heights of the plants around your space, it will also help to break up the visual interest around your space rather than creating one overwhelming focal point.
Wall-Mounted Shelves
Make use of vertical space by mounting your plants on the wall. There are so many beautiful and creative ways to display your plants on the wall, either with wall-mounted planters, as seen above, or floating shelves. If you have a collection of cuttings for propagation, I highly recommend this wall-mounted propagation station, which beautifully displays all your cuttings in an attractive way rather than having them scattered on surfaces in mismatched containers!
Unused Space
Get creative with space that otherwise isn’t being used, like above a doorway, (you can mount a shelf or let a vining plant grow along the wall!), above or beside a window, or up the side of your stairway. Find an empty corner to hang a vining plant and let it grow!
Thrifted Plant Stands
Decorating with your plant doesn’t have to be pricy! You can repurpose furniture you already have or thrift cheap stools, surfaces, etc. of varying heights to display your plants. I personally like the mismatched look of unique furniture pieces. A great place to find and repurpose furniture is Facebook Marketplace. It can be fun to get really creative, like how this person used a ladder to display their plants, and this one used a tree stump!
Hang Plants from the Ceiling
There are so many ways to display plants by hanging them from the ceiling, and it opens up so many more options. You can hang plants individually or in pairs at various heights. This method will allow you to get more plants in front of the window, and you can also make use of otherwise empty corners.
Be Strategic with Larger Plants
If you have larger plants, be strategic with their placement. Make them a statement piece and plan around them. Balance them with smaller plants or allow them to have a space to themselves.
Embrace Pots as Part of Your Decor
Having beautiful pots levels up your decor and makes your collection look more intentional rather than hoarding. This also does not have to be very expensive. I find people selling collections of plant pots all the time on Facebook Marketplace, and if you buy multiple from one person I find many people are often willing to negotiate a group price. Even if you don’t want to gather a bunch of pots, cleverly covering up nursery pots by placing them in baskets, using stands with higher sides, or positioning larger plants behind furniture can make a huge difference in elevating your space.
Repurpose Furniture Intended for Hanging Things
This last decor trick is another favorite of mine: using furniture intended for hanging things other than plants. Think: clothing racks, curtain rods, coat racks, etc. I LOVE the idea of using a rod to hang plants as a room divider, which I think are done in such a cool way here and here. When you can even use the middle of your room to display your plants in an aesthetic way, it is a game changer!
I hope these few tips have inspired some ideas for styling your plants in your own home! You do not need to have a ton of space to display your plants, and your space does not need to limit your collection! With a little bit of creativity, you can celebrate your collection and make a beautiful home.

Plant Spotlight
Plant Spotlight highlights a new houseplant and its basic care tips.
This week’s Plant Spotlight is the Burros Tail Succulent.
The Burro’s Tail, or Donkey’s Tail, Succulent is a native plant of Mexico. It is an easy-to-grow succulent that thrives with well draining soil and bright light. It is known for its rounded and fleshy silver-green leaves that are densely packed on hanging stems. In spring, this plant may bloom clusters of pink to purple flowers, growing from the ends of the stems.
