Low Maintenance Houseplants that are Perfect for Busy People

Plants for the person who doesn't have time for plants!

If you already feel like your juggling too many responsibilities, finding the time to care for houseplants can be a challenge. However, if you would love to experience the benefits of having houseplants in your home, there are plenty of plants that require very little care or upkeep. Here are five low maintenance houseplants that are perfect for busy people or those who may not have a green thumb.

Note: if you are interested in any of the plants mentioned below, I have linked below the picture where you can purchase them from Succulent Box, a brand I trust and support! 1. Snake Plant

Also known as mother-in-law's tongue, the Snake Plant is virtually indestructible. It “thrives” on neglect (which means it will be fine if you forget about it for a while), requires minimal water, and can tolerate low light conditions. Its stiff, upright leaves add a modern touch to any decor, and it also helps purify the air by removing toxins.

Care Tips for the Snake Plant:

  • Light: Can tolerate low to bright indirect light

  • Water: Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings

  • Humidity: Does fine in average home humidity

  • Temperature: 60-85°F (16-29°C)

2. ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant is known for its glossy, dark green leaves and ability to survive in a variety of lighting conditions. It is drought-tolerant and can go weeks without water, making it an ideal choice for if you are a busy person. Plus, it also is a great air purifier.

Care Tips for the ZZ Plant:

  • Light: Can tolerate low to bright indirect light

  • Water: Allow soil to dry out between waterings, which means you’ll likely only be watering it every 2-3 weeks (how’s that for low maintenance?!)

  • Humidity: Average home humidity

  • Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C)

3. Pothos

The pothos is a versatile and forgiving plant that can adapt to various environments. Its trailing vines and heart-shaped leaves make it a beautiful addition to any room. A bonus is that pothos are incredibly easy to propagate, so you can enjoy its beauty in multiple spaces!

Care Tips for the Pothos:

  • Light: Can tolerate low to bright indirect light

  • Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry

  • Humidity: Does fine in average home humidity

  • Temperature: 60-80°F (16-27°C)

4. Rubber Plant

The Rubber Plant, also known as Ficus elastica, is a stunning houseplant with broad, shiny leaves that can grow quite tall, making it a striking addition to any space. It is relatively low maintenance and can tolerate a variety of indoor conditions.

Care Tips for Rubber Plant:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; can tolerate lower light

  • Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry; prefers to dry out between waterings

  • Humidity: Average home humidity

  • Temperature: 60-75°F (16-24°C)

5. Aglaonema

Also known as Chinese Evergreens, Aglaonemas are known for their variegated leaves and their ability to thrive in low light conditions. I kept mine under a side table for a while before I did some rearranging of my home, and it still did just great! They are easy to care for and can tolerate infrequent watering, making them perfect for busy lifestyles.

Care Tips for Aglaonema:

  • Light: Low to bright indirect light

  • Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry

  • Humidity: Average home humidity

  • Temperature: 60-75°F (16-24°C)
